Dirk Rohne, a Brownsmead dairy farmer who sits on the Clatsop County Planning Commission, announced his candidacy Wednesday for District 4 on the Clatsop County Board of Commissioners.

Commissioner Sam Patrick, who holds the District 4 seat, has said he will not run for re-election.

District 4 encompasses the eastern portion of Astoria to the eastern border of the county, including John Day, Svensen, Knappa, Westport, and parts of Walluski and Riverpoint.

"I am expressing my desire to represent friends, neighbors and all residents from the northeast of Clatsop County on the county commission," he said in a press release Wednesday. "It is my intention to be a positive force on the Clatsop County Commission, with the respect to the rights of our citizens and the rule of law.

"With objectivity and civility, I believe I can work effectively with others to achieve a greater end."

Rohne has been involved with several controversial decisions while serving on the planning commission. Last fall, he voted as a planning commissioner to deny approval of the Bradwood Landing liquefied natural gas project land-use application. He voted against giving a home-occupation permit to a septic transfer business. Despite his vote, the septic application passed the planning commission, but on appeal was overturned by the board.

Rohne will be opposing Cary Johnson, another member of the planning commission, who announced his candidacy for the seat Tuesday.

While serving on the planning commission, Johnson and Rohne's opinions have clashed on land-use and zoning issues.

"I am from this community, I am for this community, and I hope to find satisfaction in working with this community as your county commissioner," Rohne said.

Following college, Rohne drove across the United States and traveled through Europe, taking photographs to keep as souvenirs.

"I have seen the world, and chosen - just like most people who live here - to spend my time here," his press release said.

"I value this place and believe it's worth investing time and effort in. If you will support me in this endeavor, I will work hard for you."
